Why I Am Pursuing A Music Career

Recently, I shared a quick video on all my Socials about three reasons why I am pursuing music as a career. I wanted to dive in just a little bit deeper, so this post is as much for me as it is for you. Sometimes this road to a music career is TOUGH. It’s in those moments I need to remember why I’m doing this.

1. Music is My life

In Kindergarten, I had my first Career Day. I knew exactly what I wanted to dress up as: a “rock star.” I had a purple plastic guitar, a sequin shirt, and everything.

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t constantly singing. Now, I spend several hours a day practicing my instruments, writing songs, and just enjoying music. I figured that if I was going to be making music anyway, then maybe I should see if anyone else would like to hear it. Besides, becoming a doctor was totally out of the question—I just can’t do bloody wounds—and I doubt becoming a lawyer would be much easier.

So music it is!

2. Life is Short

About two months ago, there was a death in the family and for the first time, I’m grieving. Hard.

But if there is one thing death can teach you, it’s to value life. That tragedy made me realize that one day when I’m 125 years old (or something like that), it will be my turn to go on to Heaven. I want to look back on my life and know that I didn’t let fear hold me back.

Life is just too short to spend time on things you don’t love.

3. We Must Worship

The reason we even have music is to worship. Even if I wasn’t pursuing a music career, I would still be singing and worshiping, because God tells us to.

Psalm 96:1 says, “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (NIV)

I love this Bible verse! It’s such a clear instruction for me as a singer/songwriter but also to all of us: God wants our new songs of worship and He wants ALL of us to sing to Him!

When I think about my music career, I also think about the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20). Singing for the Lord is one way I can be obedient to that call.

One More Thought

These reasons I’ve listed definitely guide me as I start my career, but they’re actually pretty universal reasons why ALL of us should worship Jesus through music. I love when the Psalmists write about making “joyful noise” because honestly, God doesn’t require rock-star talent. Though He does say we are to “play skillfully” (Psalm 33:3).

I pray that we would all be bolder in our personal worship and sing praises to the Lord!
